Best Home Gym Equipment for Beginners
If you're starting from zero, this is the order we'd recommend buying in — and what to skip at first.

The most common mistake we see beginners make is buying a full gym's worth of equipment before finishing a single month of consistent training. This guide is about sequencing: what to buy first, what to add once a habit is established, and what most beginners can skip entirely.
Buy first
A set of adjustable dumbbells. One piece of equipment that covers presses, rows, squats, and isolation work covers more of a beginner program than anything else you could buy first. See our adjustable dumbbells guide for specific picks.
A mat. Inexpensive, and protects your floor from the first accidentally-dropped dumbbell.
Add once training is consistent (after 4–8 weeks)
A bench. Opens up incline and decline pressing variations, plus step-ups and single-leg work. Not essential on day one, but noticeably expands what's possible once the basics are in place.
Resistance bands. Useful for warm-ups, mobility, and adding variety, but not a substitute for the dumbbells above in a strength-focused program.
What most beginners can skip at first
Cardio machines are the most expensive category on this list and the easiest to substitute with a walk, run, or bodyweight conditioning circuit while you're still establishing a routine. If cardio equipment is a priority for you specifically (e.g., limited outdoor access), that's a reasonable exception — see our cardio equipment category.
Who this guide isn't for
If you're specifically training for a sport, rehabbing an injury under supervision, or already have several years of training experience, your priorities will differ from this sequencing — this guide is aimed at a true first-time home gym.
